Finished Chapter 1 today. I got off to a slow start this week, but eventually fell into a groove. The opening scene involves some metaphorical stuff with Andy’s pet bird. I got to thinking, here’s this little creature wanting so desperately to be freed from its cage, and how maybe this parallels some of Andy’s issues with her parents.
In Pretty Jane, main character PJ revealed an incident with Wade Hollis acting inappropriately with Andy when they were all in middle school. Maybe that incident really left its mark on Andy’s parents. Maybe because of it they banned her from dating in high school, maybe even interfered with her relationships in college. Maybe in trying so hard to protect their daughter from being taken advantage of again, they’ve actually been stifling her. I don’t know.
But one thing’s for sure, by the end of Chapter 1, my little bird is ready to spread her wings a bit.
